Employees shouldn’t have to deal with being discriminated against when they’re working. There are laws that offer protections from discrimination for employees, and there are laws that protect them from facing retaliatory actions if they speak out about discrimination.
Many people assume that discrimination is going to always be easy to spot, but that’s not how it usually happens. Instead, many are more subtle. They are sometimes called microaggressions or covert bias, which can make them harder to identify.
What does subtle discrimination look like?
Subtle discrimination is often hidden behind tense body language, inconsistent treatment or casual moments. It might come in the form of being repeatedly interrupted while working, left out of important conversations or getting vague feedback when others are provided with clear guidance. In other cases, it comes in the form of inappropriate jokes or comments.
One issue with subtle discrimination is that some people may not recognize the signs. This can make it difficult for people to report it, but it may be abundantly clear to the victim. If there are any signs of discrimination, regardless of how subtle, the victim and any witnesses should document the matter and attempt to obtain evidence of the incidents.
Dealing with any form of discrimination at work is a horrible situation for any employee, so some may choose to take legal action. This is a complex undertaking, which may make working with someone familiar with these matters beneficial. It’s best to do this as early as possible because these matters have time limits that apply.
